Abstract:
Willingness to communicate (WTC) is the first layer of speaking development that has been used to
determined students’ speaking performances. Many studies have been conducted before in relation of
the WTC to other variables of languages learning that indicated a positive relationship of the WTC.
However, little research has been investigated in exploring WTC inside the classroom despite the
important role of the classroom to WTC, specifically in Indonesia. Therefore, to fill the void in that
evidence-based study, this research aims at examining the connection between Indonesian students’
WTC and the classroom environment as the focus. This research employed a quantitative approach
with correlation analysis in processing the data. The data was collected by two questionnaires that
used, which are the WTC questionnaire and the classroom environment questionnaire as the
instrument. It was shared to students of ELESP Universitas Lambung Mangkurat batch 2021 using
simple random sampling technique. The finding of this research revealed a significant and a positive
relationship between the classroom environment and students’ WTC with different levels of category.
This research calls for emphasizing on utilizing more of the classroom environment to enhance
students’ WTC. The researcher hopes the findings of this study open a wider field of the study about
WTC in Indonesia especially in Universiats Lambung Mangkurat.
