Abstract:
To learn the English language students have to learn four skills that can be balanced. There are reading, writing, listening, and speaking. From those skills, speaking is one of the most important skills in daily life. Improving speaking skills, the learners need to know the use of language learning strategies. The research problem can be concluded as which strategies in learning speaking do English Language Education Study Program students of batch 2019 use the most and why do English Language Education Study Program students of batch 2019 use the strategies in learning speaking. The objective of this study is to find out which learning strategies and the reason why strategies in learning speaking are used by English Language Education Study Program students batch 2019.
This study employs a descriptive quantitative. The subject of the research would be English Language Education Study Program students of batch 2019. It used two instruments, there were questionnaire and an interview. In analyzing data, by counting the average score, while the score recording was analyzed by sequencing the score from the highest to the lowest score.
Based on the data result and discussion, it can be concluded that English Language Education Study Program students’ batch 2019 use more than one learning strategy based on their needs and situations, because metacognitive and social/affective strategies nearly appear the same results. The reason is that beneath certain conditions students know or realize the use of learning strategies they need can help them in learning speaking so that they can overcome their speaking learning problems, such as when they are not confident in pronunciation.
The researcher would like to suggest that the lecturers can direct the students to use learning strategies that suit them. Then, the students should practice using learning strategies that are usually used and can use other strategies to improve themselves and prepare more self-awareness and overcome worries in learning speaking. The last is this research can be used by future researchers as material for consideration of students' needs regarding the use of learning strategies.
