Abstract:
The success of learning English for Science course can be supported by conducting a need analysis. Hence, need analysis can provide an overview of what aspects need to be prioritized in learning. Therefore, need analysis is important to be done in order to meet the learning needs of students.
The purpose of this research was to find out the target needs and learning needs of students in learning English for Science. The subjects of this research were 60 Science education students from batch 2017 and 2018 at Lambung Mangkurat University. The method of the research was descriptive with quantitative approach and the instruments were questionnaire and interview guidelines.
The result showed that the target needs of science education students were classified into need, lack, and want. The need was speaking skill as it was a relevant skill for them. For the lack, the students were lacking in speaking skill, grammar, pronunciation, vocabulary, and translation. And for the want, the students’ goal in learning English for Science mostly to be fluent orally and written form, to succeed in learning and career. And as for the learning needs, they were classified into students’ preference activities, preference methods, and preference materials. For preference reading activities, they preferred literature related to science the most. While the preference for writing activities were writing translation related to science. For listening activities, students preferred videos or movies related to science. The last is preference speaking activities by students were role play. For teaching methods, students preferred to study in small groups. As for the preference materials, they preferred Hypothesizing: Motion and Gravity the most. All in all, the researcher suggested that students can raise their awareness around their target and learning needs, for ESP lecturers they can consider aspects that were found in this research.
