The COVID-19 outbreak has spread rapidly all over the world, adding another challenge for English teachers in Indonesia to discover new ways to deliver the material of the teaching more effectively. This research is aimed to discover the functions, the means, and the reasons of the teaching media used by the English teachers of SMKN 4 Banjarmasin during COVID-19 pandemic.
This research uses descriptive qualitative method. The total numbers of the respondents were 4 individuals from SMKN 4 Banjarmasin. Furthermore, these respondents were interviewed according to the result of the questionnaires to get deeper information about the teaching media used by the English teachers of SMKN 4 Banjarmasin during COVID-19 pandemic. This research uses the theory of Ohm (in Chan et. al, 2011) as the construct of the questionnaires. The interactive model is also used in analyzing the data of the interview. The interactive model of data analysis consists of data condensation, data display, and drawing conclusions.
The finding reveals that the teachers used a variety of teaching media for teaching English in the class, and it is concluded that the teachers had the tendency to use visual media more often for teaching English in the class, especially in the kind of pictures. The teachers also created the media on their own or retrieved the material from some sources to make into a complete media. Teaching media are used by the teachers to make it easier for both teacher and students in teaching and learning activity, especially in online classroom during COVID-19 pandemic, and encourage the students to participate more actively in learning activity. The teachers have made use of some tools such as WhatsApp, Zoom, Google Meet, and Edpuzzle to deliver the media more effectively for teaching and learning activity. Furthermore, the teaching media used were depended on the material and the class that they were going to teach. Most frequent problems that they faced were the internet condition and the students’ motivation, which occassionally could interfere the conducted online class. Regardless of the benefits of the usage of teaching media in online class, most of the teachers still prefer offline class. It will be best if the teachers can keep improving and innovating by using more different teaching media in order to enrich and optimize students’ English learning, whether it is combining two or more media for an activity, the means of materials delivered, and the frequency of its usage.
