Teaching and learning process in recent times cannot be separated from media and technology. Times are constantly evolving; the use of instructional media has certainly changed over the years. Teaching English with media is indispensable as a tool to assist a teacher in explaining her or his materials to students. The objective of this study is to identify teachers’ perceptions on the instructional media used in English language teaching at SMKN 4 Banjarmasin and to identify students’ perceptions on the instructional media used by English teachers in teaching English at SMKN 4 Banjarmasin.
This study used a descriptive design with a qualitative approach. The participants of this research are the English teachers and students of class XI RPL 1, XII UPW, XII Busana 2, and XII Kecantikan. The students were selected to be interviewed according to the result of the questionnaire to find out deeper information about their perceptions on the instructional media used by English teachers in teaching English at SMKN 4 Banjarmasin. This research uses the interactive model in analyzing the data consisting of data condensation, data display, and drawing conclusions.
The study found that the subjects perceived instructional media are important in the teaching and learning process. Instructional media used by teachers during online learning are PowerPoint, pictures, videos, audio, and books. Most teachers have difficulty in designing instructional media because lack of the skills to use ICT. Meanwhile, the students mentioned that the advantages of instructional media received by students are different based on whether or not the media is attractive to students’ interest, then easy or not to understand the material with the instructional media. Therefore, it is suggested that the teachers to explore ICT to make it easier to create media and make the material easy to understand. Furthermore, for students it is suggested to contribute positively by instructional media used in the online classrooms and need to be aware of their own needs and find additional materials from any sources.
