English word stress is part of the suprasegmental features. It is essential to apply because word stress clarifies the speaker's delivery meaning to the listener. Incorrect placement of words stress can change the meaning and make English sound not like a native speaker. This study aims to determine how the students of the English Language Education Study Program of ULM batch 2019 mispronounce the stresses of English words.
The research used the descriptive quantitative method. This research was conducted on English Language Education Study Program batch 2019 FKIP ULM students. Convenience sampling was used to get the sample. Therefore, 19 students were recruited to be the sample. Then, the oral test was used to answer the research problem of this research. After that, the researcher used steps to analyze the data: identifying, transcribing, and examining.
The result showed that the students mostly mispronounced the stresses in words with more than two syllables, especially nouns. The students mispronounced words to stress in part of pronouncing stress of English words, repeated in part of pronouncing the stress of English words in sentences with the same words. Then, mispronounced word stress happened in words with suffixes. Students placed the stress on the other syllable. Based on the finding, the researcher suggests the students should pay more attention to the rule of the placement of English words stress studied in the phonology class and listen to many native speakers to increase knowledge about the correct placement of English words stress.
