This study aims to examine the readability of reading texts contained in textbooks. Some studies that discuss readability use textbooks found in senior high schools, and there are only a few studies discuss readability use textbooks found in vocational high schools. Therefore, this study appears to fill the void of previous research. This research aimed to determine the readability level of reading text in an English textbook entitled "FORWARD" for the twelfth-grade students of Vocational High School. The design and approach in this study use descriptive-quantitative research to answer research questions.
The researcher used descriptive content analysis as a research design. The method used in this research is content analysis with a quantitative analysis approach. The material analyzed is a document. The readability analysis process in this study used mathematical patterns to determine the level of readability at which the researcher describes the readability of the level of reading text chosen in the book "FORWARD".
After analyzing the reading text data in the Forward for Vocational School Grade XII textbook using the Flesch Reading Ease Formula, the researcher found the reading text's readability in the Forward for Vocational School Grade XII textbook was not suitable for the 12th-grade students of vocational high school. The results of the Flesch Reading Ease formula score showed that of the 12 reading texts in the English textbook entitled FORWARD for the twelfth-grade students of Vocational High School, they are categorized into 4 levels such as: Easy, Fairly Easy, Standard / Plain English, and Fairly Difficult. Based on the results obtained through calculations using the Flesch Reading Ease formula, it is proven that of the 12 texts whose readability is calculated, there are 11 reading texts, or (91.67%) of these texts that fall into the Easy, Fairly Easy, and Standard / Plain English categories and there is only 1 reading text or (8.33%) text of that number which is suitable for the 12th-grade students of vocational high school.
