This study aimed to find out whether there is any difference in students’
vocabulary mastery when taught using video and taught using the picture. This
study took place at SMP Negeri 14 Banjarbaru. This study used a quantitative
method with a quasi-experimental design. VIII C was chosen as the experimental
group, which was taught using video as the teaching media, and VIII D as the
control group taught using the picture.
The result of this study showed that the students’ mean score on the pre-test
from the experimental class was 71,1 and on the post-test 82,6. Meanwhile, the
mean score of the pre-test from students from the control class was 65,1 and the
post-test was 65,7. After calculating the data using SPSS 26.0, the researcher found
the Mann-Whitney U Test, the Asymp.Sig (2-tailed) is 0.04, which means that it is
< 0.05. Therefore, it can be concluded that the Null Hypothesis (H0) is rejected, and
there is a difference in students’ vocabulary mastery taught using video and using
the picture. So, it can be concluded that the use of video as teaching media at SMP
Negeri 14 Banjarbaru gave more effect on students’ vocabulary mastery.
The researcher suggests English teachers out there could include videos in their
teaching activities since this study found out that using video gave more effect than
the picture, and also, teachers could combine two or three media to make their
teaching activities become more fun and enjoyable for the students. As for the future
researcher, the researcher suggests conducting research in the same field by using
more advanced and modern video or audio-visual media.
