English speaking ability is not an instant process to acquire by English language learners, in which there are several factors that can determine whether the learning process is easy to achieve. There are several studies which investigate factors affecting English speaking ability. However, previous studies still pay attention to the factors related to the psychological condition in learning language. For that reason it is important to investigate the other factors which affect how the speaking ability can be achieved; therefore, this study aims at investigating the factors that affect the speaking ability of English Language Education students batch 2019 of FKIP ULM
This study used a descriptive design with a qualitative approach with the total of three students who specifically got scores (A, A-, and B+) in Intermediate Speaking course from batch 2019 at the English Language Education Study Program in Lambung Mangkurat University. The data was collected by conducting a documentation and in-depth interview. The data was then presented and described in descriptive form.
The results showed that there were two key internal and external elements that affected students' speaking abilities. The findings revealed that students had interest and motivation due to being inspired by their peers who speak the language more fluently, receiving a lot of exposure to the language, and being aware of the importance of learning the language. Meanwhile, students mostly found that they were not completely paying attention to their language competency and only focused on their fluency in regards to the internal factors. Lastly, it was discovered that external factors had an impact on students’ speaking ability reflected in the fact that students would prepare themselves before they performed speaking tasks. In addition, the environment such as mutual friends and English lecturers also had influential factors to enhance their speaking ability. In conclusion, students’ psychological condition which leads to their internal motivation and the engagement from others around them are essential factors that contribute to their speaking ability. Therefore, it is suggested to both students and lecturers to recognize what factors significantly affect their speaking performance.
