During the COVID-19 pandemic, teaching and learning were conducted remotely. This surely caused different experiences for students to learn speaking in the academic context. The objective of this research is to describe the perceptions of the ELESP students batch 2019 towards online learning in the Advanced Speaking course.
This research uses the qualitative approach with descriptive study as the research design. Open-ended questionnaires and interviews are used to gather the data. The participants are from five classes of Advanced Speaking: 69 students who filled out the questionnaire and six students as the interviewees.
Based on the findings, students mainly perceive the online learning environment positively as it was conducive enough and it brought positive effects on their learning results. Most students perceive the learning delivery positively. More than half of students perceive the applications used during the course positively. Most students perceive these applications as helpful and already support the learning process. Students positively perceive the implementation of online learning in speaking class although they have experienced both technical and pedagogical difficulties.
In conclusion, most students perceive the implementation of online learning in the Advanced Speaking course in a positive way. Speaking in the academic context still can be carried out optimally through online learning. For the suggestions, the instructors could add more media/games related to speaking. A follow-up on students’ progress needs to be done more frequently and feedback needs to be given thoroughly to more students.
