English is one of the required subjects of the school, and English is adopted as a foreign language. English consists of four skills that require preparation. These are listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Almost all people in the world used English to communicate to one and another, whether spoken or written. This research aimed to describe the techniques used by the teacher in teaching English at MAN 3 Banjarmasin.
The researcher used qualitative-descriptive as the research method. Then the data is described in descriptive form. The setting of this research, the researcher chose MAN 3 Banjarmasin. It is a senior high school located in Jalan Batu Benawa Raya, Banjarmasin. The subject of this research is an English teacher at MAN 3 Banjarmasin. The subject of this research an English teachers in teaching speaking at MAN 3 Banjarmasin. The English teachers teach at different grade levels, 10th and 12th grade of MAN 3 Banjarmasin. The instruments used in this research were observation and interview. Observation was did by researcher to find out the teachers technique in teaching English. To get the data, the researcher observed as long as the teacher teaching in class with field note. After the researcher finished observation, the researcher get data from interview. Interviews can provide information that cannot obtain through observation or verify observations. In the interview, the researcher asked several questions related to techniques.
Based on the result, the researcher saw that the teachers at MAN 3 Banjarmasin used several techniques while they were teaching in class. The techniques used were discussion, brainstorming, questions and answers, drill. The techniques used by the teachers in the classroom is suitable in creating certain environment, for example discussion and brainstorming technique help in creating more active and serious environment.
In conclusion, it was concluded that the teacher at MAN 3 Banjarmasin using several techniques: Questions and Answers, Brainstorming, Discussion, Story Telling, Drill, Role play. The researcher suggests that the teacher can use of various techniques. So, it can be expected that students will be more active and students do not get bored while studying in class and also to minimize passive students.
